Diego Cortez:

Basquiat's Discoverer, Gallerist,

and Basquiat Authentication Committee Co-Founder

Jean-Michel was a New York City street artist when Diego Cortez spotted his raw talent and literally brought him into his studio and gave him $200 to purchase paint, brushes, and canvas.  His first gallerist, Cortez remained close to the artist up to the time of his death. Along with Jean-Michel’s Father, Cortez co-founded the Basquiat Authentication Committee where he was the most knowledgeable expert.

Cortez rarely comments on paintings attributed to his former protégé.  In the case of the Basquiat Venice Collections’ six paintings, however, he was so impressed that he has given an unqualified authentication opinion.  His authenticity letters can be found in DOCUMENTS.
